This post won’t be easy to write. But I decided to share with you my experience when I stopped practicing mindfulness meditation and the effect this had on my life, my business and my health.
I have to say that we usually don’t know what we’re missing if we don’t know any better. When I stopped meditating I realized how important this practice has been in my life.
This year has been very challenging for me since the beginning. As I’m growing my coaching practice, I faced some challenges that stretched me out of my comfort zone. As an introvert, I tend to find comfort in quiet, fewer good quality friendships, and keeping things to myself most of the time.
Growing a business as an introvert can be really hard sometimes (although I found that it can be a strength too like the ability to fully connect and listen to my clients). You’re constantly on social media, on the internet, on Youtube, on Pinterest, reading and answering comments, reading books to learn new skills, etc.
My favorite part has been to get on the phone with my clients. I love listening to them and supporting them to achieve their goals and transform their health. But outside of these sessions, things can get pretty chaotic haha
Why And How I Stopped Meditating
I’ve been meditating for a few years now, on and off. It got serious after I was diagnosed with a list of chronic conditions. I wanted to use mindfulness meditation to connect with myself more and figure out why my body was breaking down.
I incorporated it into my morning routine. So I would wake up, meditate, journal about what I noticed in my body, express my gratitude, visualize and read for a bit. Since then, both my mental and physical health improved dramatically.
To be honest with you, I have no idea what happened. But I realize that my evening routine changed a bit, so I was sleeping later than I’m used to and waking up an hour ahead. The other mistake I started making was checking my phone the minute I woke up.
I would see emails that need to be answered, messages on social media, and start thinking about all the things I had to do. The moment my brain starts stressing out, I couldn’t sit through meditation or do anything. I had to start the day.
Everything went downhill from there.
You’re probably familiar with the expression “we are what we eat”. If you put toxic unhealthy foods into your body, guess how you’re gonna feel? Well, I believe 100% that we are also what we think about. We need to feed both the body and the mind with the right fuel. As we take the time to exercise our bodies, we need to take the time to exercise, detoxify, and clear our minds from the toxins that build up over time.
What Happened When I Stopped Mindfulness Meditation
I discontinued my routine sometime mid-February. The first few days were a bit chaotic. I was jumping from one task to another. I couldn’t focus. I also noticed that I’d check social media more frequently than I normally do. Each time I took a break, I grabbed my phone and started scrolling. I wasted so much time on social media. I can’t even.
My sleeping routine got worse. Since I was waking up late, I was sleeping late each night. The cycle continued. And everything felt like a rush from the beginning of the day until the end.
The past few days have been the hardest. I was sitting there looking at how chaotic I felt. My body was full of anxiety and stress that was building up. I completely abandoned my journaling routine and it felt like I abandoned myself as a result.
Something needed to change.
I Resumed My Morning Routine at 3 P.M
What a relief it was to come back home to myself. I turned my phone off and tuned in. A lot has accumulated in my body and my heart that didn’t have a way out. I wrote pages and pages and felt a huge weight off my shoulders. I noticed how my shoulders were tight, and also how much tension I was carrying in my lower back without knowing. Even though I didn’t feel pain. It was there.

Most people spend their waking hours jumping from one thing to another, filling their days with distractions and to-do lists.
I can’t make you meditate or journal. But just be aware that If you never pause to feel your feelings, journal, get to know yourself at a deeper level, everything stays hidden inside of you. We create distractions to avoid being alone or to avoid facing certain situations in our lives. Maybe we’re scared of the answers.
Throughout the past few years, my morning routine gave me the space to be myself in a noisy world. To support myself and my body to heal and to also go after my dreams.
I was able to develop a strong mind-body connection, discover what I want to create in this world, and set my intentions for the day. Through journaling, I expressed myself and also cleared the shatter in my head.
As a result, I’d be fully focused on my tasks. In the moment.
The temptations of constantly checking social media fade away because you’re always centered. You don’t need to seek distractions and consume a lot of feel-good information.
Real talk now. Here are some of the things you may be thinking to yourself right now:
- “I’m not a morning person”
- “I seriously don’t have time. I only have enough time to get up and rush to work”
- “I can’t sit and meditate. I can’t focus”
- “It works for you Sofia you don’t have kids”
Some of these are legit reasons. But I’m still going to challenge them.
This is called resistance. We’re creatures of habit and our brains don’t like change. You’re trying to break a lifetime habit and install a new one. It’s normal to feel like it’s impossible and come up with all the reasons why it can’t work.
The truth is your morning routine can be 4 minute or one hour. It can be whatever you want it to be. The important thing is to schedule time for yourself each day for silence.
And let’s be real, it’s hard to take a break from the world once you get going. So I find mornings to be the optimum time. you’re able to wake up before the world does. You’re less likely to be disrupted by a text or a notification. You can set your alarm 30 minutes earlier to do this.
